Caring Beyond the Classroom: AKEM Opens a Walk-In Clinic for Students and the Community

In September 2025, Africa Kids Evangelism Ministries (AKEM) opened a walk-in health clinic on our school campus in Djagble, Togo, marking a significant step forward in caring for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.

This clinic was born out of both necessity and compassion.

The Story Behind the Clinic

One of our students became ill during the school day and was sent home. On his way home, he was struck by a motorcycle. By the grace of God, there were no major injuries, but the incident revealed a painful reality: there were no clinics close to the school, and access to medical care required traveling long distances at great expense.

That moment compelled us to act.

We recognized the urgent need to provide on-site medical care whenever possible, not only for students, but for staff and the surrounding community as well.

A Ministry of Healing and Compassion

At AKEM, our mission has always extended beyond education alone. We seek to care for educational, spiritual, and physical needs, following the example of Jesus Christ, who healed the sick, fed the hungry, and saved the lost.

The walk-in clinic reflects this calling.

While students are our priority, the clinic is open to:

School staff

Families

Members of the surrounding community

Serving Real Needs Every Day

Currently, the clinic serves approximately 100 people each month, including students, staff, and community members. It operates daily during school hours and offers donation-based services, making care accessible to those who need it most.

Services include:

Basic medical consultations

First aid and wound care

Malaria testing

Blood pressure monitoring

Pre-natal consultations (no births at this time)

The clinic is staffed by nurses, with oversight from a supervising physician, and supported by visiting providers and volunteers when available.

A Grateful Community

Before the clinic opened, the nearest medical facility was far away and costly, making timely care difficult for many families. Since opening, the response has been overwhelming. The community is grateful, and we have already seen lives helped and complications prevented through early care and intervention.

What was once a barrier has now become a place of hope.
